Big Wolf Band - The Jamhouse 1st February 2023
There was an air of excitement and more than a feeling of the gathering of the clans with Birmingham’s extensive network of blues fans gathering to watch one of their finest. A good few hundred undaunted by the train strike made their way to The Jamhouse, which included other musicians and the proprietor of another well known music venue. Nearly two hours of tight musicianship, featuring band leader Jonathan Earp’s guitar licks neatly interspersed with a mix of hammond and piano from Robin Fox adding a depth often missing (If I Ever Loved Another Woman stands out in particular). A mix of favourites from their 2 studio albums and and the introduction of new material from a forthcoming new studio album (with a live album also being finalised for release this year) kept up the momentum till the end and a much deserved encore. Special shout out for drummer Timbo Jones and solid backup from band co-founder Mick Jeynes on bass and Justin Johnson’s rhythm guitar. Little wonder the band has been entered as UK Blues Band of the Year 2023. We wish them luck.
